This view shows the approach to Yosemite Valley, where steep walls and dense trees frame the way into the valley. The print is an albumen print made from a mammoth plate, and its date of about 1865 places it a year after President Lincoln signed the 1864 grant that set aside the valley and the Mariposa Big Trees for public use under the state of California. Photographers working in the valley then hauled heavy cameras and glass plates over rough trails, so large prints like this one were prized as evidence that the scenery was as dramatic as travelers had heard. Notice how the trees and rock walls dominate the composition and dwarf any human presence.
