The entrance to Yosemite Valley is the gateway the record names, the point where the trail and the granite walls meet and the valley floor opens beyond. Photographs like this one were made in the mid-1860s, shortly after Congress set aside the valley and the Mariposa Grove of big trees for public use and protection in 1864, when the region was still hard to reach and largely new to most Americans. Albumen prints of this size were prized for their fine detail, and the trees, cliffs and sky in the image show why the valley drew early visitors and artists alike.
