The catalog's caption tracings point to waterfalls as this view's main subject, which sets it apart from the broader valley scenes that dominate Carleton Watkins's Yosemite work. Watkins, a San Francisco photographer, made his large-format pictures of the valley in the 1860s, when few Americans had seen it and California had only recently been given responsibility for protecting it. This image was reproduced as an illustration in *The Yosemite Book* of 1868, a publication that carried the valley's scenery to readers far from California. The date and title come from an unverified caption card, so the 1868 dating should be read with that caveat in mind.
