The caption card places this view in Yosemite, though the question mark in the title signals that the location was never fully confirmed. A stream runs through the foreground while a mountain rises behind it, a composition that suited visitors and photographers after Yosemite Valley became a national park in 1890. The Detroit Publishing Company issued the print in the late 1890s and early 1910s, when it sold color views of American scenery made by the photochrom process, a lithographic method that produced vivid, painterly results.
