Here Yosemite is a brand name rather than a landmark: the label advertises a fine cut tobacco sold under that name by John T. Hancock of Dubuque, Iowa. The lithograph was printed in Cincinnati, Ohio, by the firm Donaldson & Elmes, one of many shops that produced colorful labels for tobacco packages in the 1870s. Such labels were pasted onto packages to catch a buyer's eye, and the valley, already famous after Congress granted it for public use in 1864, made an appealing emblem. The record dates the piece to about 1872.
