A. Thomas & Son's grape brand chewing tobacco label is distinguished by its fruit imagery, with grapes chosen as the emblem for a product that was otherwise sold on plugs and twists of leaf. Lithographed in color during the decades between 1860 and 1880, when printed tobacco labels were becoming a standard part of marketing, the design shows how manufacturers used bright, easily recognized pictures to set their goods apart on crowded shop shelves. Such labels were often the only advertising a customer saw before buying, so the choice of a familiar, appealing image mattered. Looking closely at the color work reveals how much effort went into making a small paper wrapper attractive enough to sell the tobacco inside.
