The name on this tobacco package, Velocipede, points to the pedal-driven bicycles that swept American cities around 1869 and 1870. Harris, Beebe & Co. of Quincy, Illinois, made the tobacco, and the Hatch Lithograph Company of New York printed the color label. The record also lists women as a subject, a sign that riding had become a visible pastime for women as well as men. Tobacco makers often borrowed popular novelties to catch buyers' eyes, so the label also shows how quickly the velocipede craze reached everyday consumer goods.
