Few 1880s bicycle events were staged as multi-day camps, and this lithograph advertises one held in Springfield, Massachusetts, on September 18, 19, and 20, 1883. The Springfield Bicycle Club planned an exhibition alongside a tournament, so the poster promised both machines on display and races for riders. Springfield was an important center of American bicycle manufacturing in the period, and the bicycle craze of the early 1880s drew large crowds to club events like this one. The print was made by Milton Bradley & Co., a Springfield firm better known for board games, which shows how local printing businesses took on commercial art work of this kind. Its bright color and bold type were meant to catch the eye of passersby.
