Few American posters of the 1890s show the bicycle craze as plainly as this one, which advertised a two-day racing tournament in Springfield, Massachusetts, on September 11 and 12, 1895. Springfield was a major center of American bicycle manufacturing at the time, so the event drew on a local industry and a fast-growing enthusiasm for cycling. The designer, Will H. Bradley, was one of the leading American poster artists of the decade, and his bold flat shapes and strong color show the influence of European poster art, particularly the work of Jules Chéret, which he helped bring into American graphic design.
