Held on September 11 and 12, 1895, the Springfield Bicycle Club tournament took place in Springfield, Massachusetts, a city that was then one of the country's leading bicycle manufacturing centers. The bicycle craze of the 1890s drew large crowds to races and club events, and posters like this one were meant to pull them in. The design is by Will H. Bradley, a prominent American graphic designer whose bold flat color and decorative lettering helped shape the poster style of the decade. Printed as a color lithograph, it shows how commercial printing had begun treating everyday public events as subjects for artistic design.
