The label's brand name, "Double-warp Velocipede," joins a term from weaving with the fashion of the moment. A warp is the set of threads run lengthwise through a loom, so the name suggests a sturdy cloth, while "velocipede," the early bicycle often nicknamed the "boneshaker," reflects the craze for these machines around 1869. Dry goods merchants often attached such topical names to their wares to attract attention. The bison among the pictured figures is a reminder that many nineteenth-century trade labels relied on animal emblems to stand out on crowded shelves.
