A tobacco package label from 1869 puts the velocipede craze on a small, colorful lithograph, printed by M.V. Noody of Terre Haute, Indiana, for use on tobacco packages. Velocipedes, the early pedal-driven bicycles known as boneshakers, had only recently reached American streets and swept through towns, riding academies, and fairgrounds in 1868 and 1869 before the fashion faded. Manufacturers often borrowed the newest enthusiasm to catch a buyer's eye, so the label works as both an advertisement and a record of a short-lived fad. It also shows how commercial lithography, which reached ordinary Americans through labels like this, could make a fashionable novelty instantly familiar.
