Two riders, William and Ella Orford, headline this poster as "The Oxfords," billed for an original bareback act and a "sensational double jockey" routine in which riders worked together at full gallop. The show is the Adam Forepaugh & Sells Brothers consolidated circus, a combined outfit formed in the 1890s after the Forepaugh and Sells Brothers enterprises merged. Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati, one of the leading American makers of circus posters at the time, printed the sheet in color. Bareback riding was among the most popular attractions in late nineteenth-century circus programs, and posters like this one were meant to draw crowds through bold color and bold claims.
