Kilpatrick's famous ride is the feature this poster advertises, and its subject headings point to a disabled performer riding a bicycle, a novelty that drew crowds to the big top. The show was the product of the Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers circuses, which combined their operations in the late 1890s and toured as one of the largest traveling shows in the country. Large chromolithographs like this one, printed in bold color by the Courier Company, were pasted on walls and fences in towns along the route, so they were built to catch the eye from across a street. Look closely at the rider and the bicycle, since the poster's energy depends on showing a feat that seemed to defy the performer's body.
