The Melrosas, billed as "miraculous," headline this chromolithograph for the combined Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers show, and the poster's emphasis on cyclists and aerialists points to the bicycle as a crowd draw. The two rival American circuses merged in 1897, and their advertising from around 1900 aimed to fill the bill with spectacle. Cycling was at the height of its popularity in the 1890s, so audiences already knew the act. Posters like this, printed in multicolor by firms such as the Courier Company in Buffalo, were pasted on walls and fences to pull crowds to a single day's performance.
