The poster promotes the L'Étendard français bicycles and tricycles by name, and its title places the machines at the center of the design. Jules Chéret drew it in 1891, and the Chaix printing house in Paris produced it as a color lithograph, a process that let advertisers use bold, flat areas of color at street scale. By the early 1890s cycling was becoming a fashionable pastime in France, and Chéret, who helped establish the modern illustrated poster, often filled his sheets with lively figures in motion to suggest freedom and speed. The piece is a useful record of how makers pitched new machines to the public.
