Ride a Stearns and be content" is the slogan that gives this 1896 chromolithograph its particular pitch, pressing one bicycle brand rather than cycling in general. The Stearns name belonged to E.C. Stearns & Company of Syracuse, New York, a bicycle maker active during the 1890s boom, when cycling drew huge crowds of buyers and advertisers competed for their attention. The printed credit to J. Ottmann Lithographing Company, based in New York's Puck Building, places the sheet among the city's commercial color printers, when chromolithography was the main way to make large advertising posters.
