Congress set Yellowstone aside in 1872 as the first national park, and this poster ties its wilderness to the bicycle, a machine that was still new when it was made. Bicycles swept American cities and country roads in the 1890s, and advertisers quickly used the wheel as a symbol of independence and adventure. Posters of this kind were usually printed in bold color lithography so they would stand out to passersby. Its pairing of a famous natural destination with a popular mode of travel shows how closely the bicycle craze and the growth of tourism were linked.
