The label's title promotes Suggett & Kimball's Peerless Tobacco with a "Prize Medal Awarded" claim, a common boast in the 1860s, when manufacturers competed for medals at fairs and exhibitions to win buyers. It was printed in color by Moller & Forst, a New York lithography firm at 12 Vesey Street, and dates to about 1864, in the middle of the Civil War. The catalog also lists women and nudes as subjects, which shows how tobacco makers of the period used idealized female figures to make their packaging eye-catching. Such labels are useful to historians of both advertising and commercial printing.
