The picture shows the young Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, riding in a reconnaissance car beside Maj. Gen. Donald H. Connolly, commander of the U.S. Army Persian Gulf Command, as they inspect American troops. The Shah had come to the throne in 1941, when the Allies forced his father to abdicate. The Persian Gulf Command, set up in 1942, moved Lend-Lease war supplies through Iran to the Soviet Union, so the scene reflects Iran's role as a wartime supply corridor. The record's date is March 1, 1944.
