Lady Ackland, the wife of a British officer taken prisoner at Saratoga, is shown in the camp of American General Horatio Gates after the British surrender in October 1777. Her husband, William Ackland, was among the captured officers, and she made the journey to the American lines to be near him, a trip that drew attention to the courtesy extended to enemy wives during the campaign. This engraving was made around 1857 after a painting by Alonzo Chappel, a New York artist known for scenes of the Revolution, and was published by Martin, Johnson & Co. in New York. It reflects the mid-century interest in stories of women in the Revolutionary War.
