Rather than a battle scene, this woodcut is a page of news: a supplement to *The Colonial Gazette* that prints General Washington's letter to the governor of Maryland announcing the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. Cornwallis gave up his army at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781 after a siege by Franco-American forces supported by a French fleet, a defeat that effectively decided the final campaign of the war. Issued as a supplement, the sheet was meant to carry word of the victory to readers quickly.
