Few events drew more nineteenth-century print buyers than the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781, and this Currier & Ives lithograph, issued around 1876, revisits that moment as the nation approached its centennial. Cornwallis did not attend the ceremony in person. He sent his deputy, Brigadier General Charles O'Hara, and the American side was represented by General Benjamin Lincoln. The surrender followed a siege by combined American and French forces, and it was effectively the last major campaign of the Revolutionary War.
