The British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781, effectively ended the major land fighting of the Revolutionary War, and this print shows that moment. Lord Cornwallis stayed behind his lines and sent a subordinate to offer his sword, a snub that became part of the event's lore. Images of the surrender circulated widely in the nineteenth century, when Revolutionary subjects were popular with engravers and a growing public. The record notes a Copyright Office entry and a date of about 1845, though the attribution to Baillie is unverified.
