Among the Darktown caricatures Currier & Ives issued in 1897, this lithograph shows a courting pair out on bicycles, drawing on the bicycle craze that swept the United States in the 1890s. The Darktown series was a body of racist comic prints that portrayed Black Americans as figures of ridicule, using exaggerated features and mocking assumptions about their courtship and leisure. The catalog raisonné cited in its record places the print among the firm's late-century comic output. Today it is best read as evidence of how popular entertainment reinforced racial stereotypes, not as neutral genre humor.
