The drawing marks the spot where Union General John Sedgwick was killed, rendered in pencil and Chinese white on tan paper and dated to about May 9, 1864. Sedgwick commanded the VI Corps and was shot by Confederate sharpshooter fire at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, while inspecting lines during the Overland Campaign. The subjects listed for the sheet include the artillery battery and its fortifications, which suggests a soldier's-eye record of the ground. Sedgwick was one of the most respected senior commanders in the Army of the Potomac, so his death was a significant loss.
