Walpi, perched on a narrow finger of First Mesa in northeastern Arizona, is one of the Hopi villages that the Snake Dance has long been held in, and this aerial view shows how the stone houses cling to the mesa's edge high above the surrounding desert. The photoprint was made around 1928, when airplane sightseeing was new and companies offered passengers views of the Southwest from above. Ceremonies like the Snake Dance, which are central to Hopi religious life, drew outside visitors and photographers, and the image shows the village as a place that has been continuously inhabited for centuries. The date and credits come from a caption card and have not been independently verified.
