Laid out across the Brookland neighborhood in northeast Washington, the Catholic University of America is the subject here, seen from above. The university was founded in the late 1880s with the support of the American Catholic bishops and approval from Pope Leo XIII, and it became the national Catholic institution for advanced study. The photograph was made by the National Aerograph Co., a commercial firm that sold aerial photoprints in the early 1920s, when airplane photography was still a novelty. The caption card dates it to April 1923, though that information is unverified.
