This aerial view shows Hoover Dam on the Colorado River at the Nevada-Arizona line, with Lake Mead spreading out behind the concrete wall. The dam was built between 1931 and 1936 to control floods, store water, and generate hydroelectric power, and the reservoir it created became the largest in the United States by volume. The print is attributed to the U.S. Air Force, and its date is recorded only as 1948 or 1949, so the exact year of the flight remains uncertain. Even so, it captures the dam's scale against the desert landscape from above, a vantage that was still relatively new for documenting large public works in the late 1940s.
