Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on light green paper, this sheet shows Gen. James S. Wadsworth's division in action in the Wilderness, close to the spot where the general was mortally wounded on May 6, 1864. Wadsworth, a New York politician and soldier who was then in his late fifties, was the oldest general officer to be killed in the Civil War. The fighting in the dense second-growth woods of Virginia, May 5 to 7, was confused and often fought at close range, which made eyewitness sketches like this one rare and useful for understanding the terrain.
