A nine-year-old named Fanny Breto was picking cranberries beside her father on a private bog near Bang's bog in Wareham, Massachusetts, in September 1911. The caption card that came with the print, from the National Child Labor Committee, records her age and the work, and the picture is attributed to Lewis Hine based on its provenance. Hine spent these years documenting children in industrial and farm labor for the committee, and autumn cranberry harvests, done largely by hand, often drew in whole families, including young children. The print comes from an album of agricultural subjects, which places it among his records of rural work.
