A boy stands at a planing machine at the Indiana Manufacturing Company in Peru, Indiana, a small city on the Wabash River, in a picture dated October 1908. The National Child Labor Committee's caption card and the print's provenance link it to Lewis Hine, who photographed young workers for the committee in these years. Hine's pictures were meant to document children in mills, factories and other workplaces, and this one shows how close a young worker could stand to dangerous machinery.
