A Postal Telegraph messenger boy from Indianapolis, photographed in August 1908, represents the young workers who carried telegrams through city streets for a commercial wire company. The title comes from the National Child Labor Committee's caption card, and the print is attributed to Lewis Hine based on its provenance. Hine spent much of the decade documenting working children for the committee, and messenger boys were a frequent subject of campaigns against child labor. Filed in an album of street trades, the photograph offers a record of how such jobs were organized in the early twentieth century.
