Few workplaces in the anthracite fields were as hard on young workers as the breaker, and this January 1911 view of the Ewen Breaker at South Pittston, operated by the Pennsylvania Coal Co., shows its boys and men during the noon hour, away from the machinery. The title comes from a National Child Labor Committee caption card, and the print is attributed to Lewis Hine on the basis of its provenance. Breaker boys, who picked slate from coal as it moved along chutes, were a common concern of child labor reformers, and Hine's pictures of such workplaces helped the committee make its case to the public.
