Looking south from 42nd Street, this night view shows the stretch of Broadway that came to be called the Great White Way, a nickname for the theater district's electric signs and marquees that took hold in the early 1900s. By about 1908, the area around 42nd Street was a busy center of theater and entertainment, and the record's subject headings point to crowds of spectators and to motion picture devices, suggesting that new film entertainment was part of the scene. The photograph is worth studying for the glow of electric lights that turned the street into a nighttime spectacle for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
