A small Lowcountry community in South Carolina, McPhersonville, is the subject here, and the drawing records its burning on February 1, 1865, as Union forces under William T. Sherman moved north from Savannah. The sheet is a field-style sketch in pencil, Chinese white, and black ink wash on tan paper, a medium that let artists work quickly while troops were on the march. Its subjects, soldiers, dwellings, and troop movements, reflect the campaign's broader pattern of destruction, which many Southerners remembered for decades afterward. The small scale of the sheet makes it a useful record of how the war's march through the countryside was seen and documented at the time.
