Here the Missouri campaign is cast as a hunt, with the Union general Nathaniel Lyon's name playing on "lion" in the title. The unsigned lithograph, published in 1861, is attributed to Currier & Ives in standard catalogues of their work and belongs to the wave of Northern political prints that followed the secession crisis. In June 1861, Lyon's federal troops defeated Missouri state forces at Boonville on the Missouri River, one of the early engagements in the fight over whether the state would stay in the Union. Prints like this one show how quickly such battles were turned into popular satire.
