This pencil drawing shows the Virginia town of Gainesville, where Confederate and Union forces clashed on August 28, 1862, during the Second Manassas campaign. The fighting there was part of a broader contest for control of the rail lines through northern Virginia, and Gainesville sat along the route Stonewall Jackson's troops used to strike at the Union army's flank. The record credits the artist only with the initials "E.F.," so the drawing's maker remains unidentified. It was later given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919 as part of a larger Civil War drawing collection.
