Few single days of the Civil War were as deadly as September 17, 1862, when Union and Confederate armies fought along Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This hand-colored lithograph from the New York firm Currier & Ives commemorates that battle by name and date. The firm sold inexpensive prints to a broad public, and its battle scenes let people far from the fighting follow the war's news. The record gives the publication date as either 1862 or 1863. Antietam ended Lee's first invasion of the North and gave Lincoln the opening he needed to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
