Fought in rain and mud around the earthworks of Fort Magruder, the battle at Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 5, 1862, pitted Union troops under Gen. George B. McClellan against the Confederate rear guard as Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's army withdrew up the Peninsula toward Richmond. Both sides suffered heavy casualties before the Confederates pulled back during the night. New York publisher Currier & Ives, known for popular scenes aimed at a broad audience, issued this lithograph later that year, offering families at home a picture of a distant campaign that was then in the news.
