The inscription "large cut" points to the railroad cut at Allatoona Pass in north Georgia, where the Western & Atlantic Railroad ran through a ridge. On October 5, 1864, a Union garrison held the position against a Confederate attack, which helped protect the rail line that supplied Sherman's army during its campaign toward Atlanta. The sheet is a pencil drawing with Chinese white and black ink wash on green paper, a combination that gives the terrain its tonal depth. The Library of Congress received it in 1919 as a gift from J.P. Morgan.
