Custer is shown saluting Stephen Dodson Ramseur at the Woodstock races on October 9, 1864, a meeting the title places in the Shenandoah Valley on the same day as the fighting at Tom's Brook. The drawing is a small pencil sketch touched with Chinese white on blue-green paper, and its mat inscription describes the two men as academy classmates, a tie that makes the gesture of courtesy across the lines especially notable. Ramseur, a Confederate division commander, was mortally wounded at Cedar Creek only ten days later, which gives the scene a poignant edge. It is one of the Civil War drawings in the Library of Congress collection.
