Marsena Rudolph Patrick, the Army of the Potomac's provost marshal general, is the figure at the center of this drawing, which shows soldiers caught gambling in camp being punished. The sketch is done in pencil and white paint on thin olive-colored paper, a light, quick medium suited to camp scenes. Gambling worried Union commanders throughout the war, since card and dice games filled idle hours, and Patrick was known for strict and sometimes humiliating penalties. Dated October 1863, the image offers a glimpse of how discipline was enforced away from the battlefield.
