Few privateers from the War of 1812 won as much fame as the *General Armstrong*, shown here under Capt. Samuel C. Reid. In September 1814, while anchored in the harbor at Fayal in the Azores, she was attacked by British warships sent to capture or destroy her. Her crew repulsed several boarding attempts before the vessel was scuttled and abandoned. American newspapers covered the fight widely, and it became a popular story of resistance. Nathaniel Currier issued this lithograph around 1830, when naval episodes from the recent war still drew strong public interest.
