Polar bears and beer share the stage in this color lithograph, whose title promises a drink "Fresh and cold--Direct from the North Pole." Lithographed in Baltimore by A. Hoen & Co. and copyrighted by F. Klemm in 1877, it dates from the advertising boom of the 1870s, when color lithographs were a popular way to promote consumer goods. Linking a product to ice and the Arctic was a common way to suggest that it stayed cool and refreshing, and the joke depends on the viewer making that connection. Its bright inks and bold humor show how printers used novelty to catch the eye.
