Black Hawk Point shows a Colorado mining camp from a high vantage point, so its streets, cabins and diggings spread across the gulch like a map. J.E. Dillingham drew the view, and Charles Shober of Chicago published it as a lithograph, with Haerting credited for the lithographic work. Dated to the early 1860s, it reflects the gold rush that drew prospectors into the Rockies and the popularity of bird's-eye views among readers curious about distant boomtowns. Black Hawk lies in Gilpin County near Central City, and the print records a settlement built quickly on steep ground.
