Titled for the Rocky Mountains, this print shows emigrants crossing the plains, with the distant peaks giving the journey its destination. Frances F. Palmer drew the design, and Currier & Ives issued it in New York around 1866. By then tens of thousands of settlers had made the overland trip on routes such as the Oregon and California trails, and inexpensive lithographs like this one brought that migration into middle-class parlors. The print is a useful view of how the period pictured westward travel for buyers who would never make the journey themselves.
