Drawn on the plains rather than conjured from secondhand reports, this engraving shows the Rocky Mountains as a faint line on the far horizon. Samuel Seymour, an artist on Stephen H. Long's 1819 and 1820 expedition, made the original sketch, and I. Clark cut the plate for the account compiled by Edwin James, the expedition's botanist and geologist. The book was published in Philadelphia in 1822 and 1823 and gave many eastern readers one of their first pictorial views of the western mountains. Notice how distant the range looks, a reminder of how far off the peaks seemed to travelers crossing open grassland.
