This lithograph presents itself as the birthplace of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, a fraternal society that grew out of the nativist organizing of the mid-19th century and was known for its anti-immigrant politics. The Library's catalog dates the print to about 1896 and lists a January 30 copyright entry, and a shelflist card links it to the lithographic firm Craig, Finley & Co., though that attribution is unverified. Fraternal orders of this kind often commissioned decorative prints for lodge halls and membership certificates, so the piece offers a view of how such groups presented their origins to members.
