Shot at close range in the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, President William McKinley is the subject of this scene, drawn in wash by T. Dart Walker and preserved here as a photographic reproduction. The gunman, Leon Czolgosz, fired on September 6, 1901, and McKinley died eight days later. The exposition, meant to showcase American industry and closer ties with Latin America, was overshadowed by the killing, and this image shows how the event was pictured in the years afterward.
